My mail program starts to download messages but then times out.
When this error occurs, stay calm, your computer isn't going to crash. What is most generally the case, is that your email account on the server is having some problems. Basically there is one of two things happening.

  • The server is having trouble sending a large file to you.
  • The server is busy and hasn't timed out yet.

Lets look at this in more detail.

Most email servers have a size restriction setting on email that can be sent and recieved. This is done for the purpose of saving server space. Also for the server to send a large file over a dial-up connection is roughly the equivelent of trying to squeeze a bowling ball through a straw. It just isn't going to work. Also on top of that the big message will stop up the flow of all the other messages behind it.

If you try to remedy this by disconnecting and then logging back in, you will get the second problem. The reason is, that all servers have a timer for this purpose. When an email is being sent or recieved, there is a time limit on how long the server will attempt to work with the file. If for some reason there are problems, then after the set amount of time, the server will reset the connection. This may sound rather annoying, however if it didn't do this you would never get back in.

There is a way you can fix this yourself

Oldwiz.net has a web based email interface on our homepage. What this means is that you can access your email account with out having to download the messages. So, you can see all of the messages that are in your inbox waiting to be downloaded to you and view and or delete any files that may cause a problem.

If you can't get it fixed, please call your system administrator and they will fix it for you.
