Why is the save password box greyed out in dial-up Networking?
You are not logged into windows, or your password *.pwl file is corrupted, or password cacheing is not enabled.

Ok, Lets take these one at a time though they are all related.

You are not logged into Windows

  • If when you start Windows it asks you for a username and password, and you Click the Cancel Button. You are not logged into Windows, and Windows not knowing who you are will not save any passwords for you.

Solution:

  1. Enter a username and password

  2. Click OK

  3. Enter password again to verify it.

  4. Click OK

  5. When Windows asks you for this information next time you start Windows, enter your password and click OK.

But I don't want to have to login to Windows

This is also the Solution for Corrupted Password Files

Password Cacheing is not enabled.

OK, you have tried the other 2 possible solutions to no avail. You restart your computer and it doesn't ask you for a username and password to login.

Solution:

Install Client for Microsoft Networks.

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Click Network
  5. Click the Add Button
  6. Click the Client in the Componet Type list.
  7. Click the Add Button
  8. Click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list.
  9. Click Client for Microsoft Networks
  10. Click OK

Windows will copy files from your Windows CDROM, or your Windows Cabinet Files if they are installed on your hard drive. You will need your Windows CD or the Cabinet files to do this.

If Windows finds you have newer versions of some files already on your computer it will ask if you wish to keep the newer files Click Yes you want to keep your newer files.

Windows will Build a Driver Information Database, and want to restart your computer.

After it restarts you should have the Login to Windows Screen.

Click OK
Then Click OK again.

You should now be able to put a check mark in Save Password.
